Play Therapy Sessions: What To Expect?

A variety of toys is carefully selected  for your child to play with. These include pretend play toys, acting out aggressive release toys, creative expression and emotional release. Art and craft and board games are also available for them to work on their emotions. Children will use toys to express a wide range of feelings, simulate real life experiences, build a positive self-image, develop confidence, resilience, and practice self-regulation.

What is Child Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a type of psychotherapy that uses play activities to help children express and understand their thoughts and feelings, as well as explore relationships and experiences. Through play, children can work through difficult emotions and develop problem-solving skills. Play therapists use a variety of play-based activities to help children make sense of their experiences and learn more effective ways of dealing with life’s challenges.

Who is Play Therapy for?

Play therapy is for children from 2 to 12. Play therapy is effective in helping children cope with a variety of issues, including grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, and social, emotional and behavioural problems. Play therapy can also help children learn how to better manage their emotions, improve their communication skills, and gain a better understanding of themselves and their relationships with others.

Do parents participate in their child’s sessions?

The first contact will be with parents to discuss the parent intake questionnaire and set up goals for therapy. Then, I meet with parents every 5-6 weeks to discuss child’s progress.

I believe in working collaboratively with parents to help identify challenges and ways I can best support you and your child through them. My goal is to help you to find the way that provides a supportive and nurturing environment with healthy communication and boundaries.

Is Play Therapy covered by Medicare, Private Health Insurance or NDIS?

I am able to accept private paying clients or NDIS funded clients.

At this stage, play therapy services are unable to rebated through Medicare.

For private health covers you will need to contact your insurer and check if they would include it as a psychotherapy.

What is Filial Therapy?

Filial therapy is a psychoeducational family intervention in which the therapist trains and supervises parents as they hold special child-centered play sessions with their own children, thereby engaging parents as partners in the therapeutic process.
